Zanele's range includes clothing accessories, such as belts, and pieces of hand made jewelery including bracelets and necklaces. The bracelets are common gifts in Zulu culture, while necklaces are offered as collateral in a marriage proposal. The belts, Zanele pragmatically comments, are to "hold ones clothes on". Most items are imported to Cape Town from crafters in the Kwazulu-Natal area, in the heart of the Zulu kingdom. While some designs bear traditional patterns generations old, the work can also show the eclectic mix of modern and old famous in urban africa - crafters produce cellphone pouches and handbags in rainbow design. The stall also carries a range of traditional african sculptures - patterned hands and feet and small family groups made of soap stone. |
